‘Care must improve’

SUPPORT is growing for our ‘Give Them Some Dignity’ campaign, to improve healthcare at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

We launched the campaign last week following concern from relatives of elderly patients over the care their loved ones have received.

The hospital has reassured families that “top quality clinical care” is its priority, and says it was aware that some aspects of care had “fallen short of our own high standards”.

Bosses have agreed to show the News/Gazette around the wards where the elderly are cared for, and a meeting between affected families and hospital representatives is in the pipeline.

Adam Hewitt, whose grandfather Reginald Glenaway is currently being cared for on Ward 5, contacted us this week to add his voice to our campaign.

He said: “Having witnessed the treatment of my grandad, the care definitely needs improving. They have lost his hearing aid, which I think is hampering his recovery.

“We had concerns over his eating and drinking, as he had not eaten or drunk for four days before admission. He has been in there for seven days and thanks to my nan’s persistence they finally put him on a drip at the weekend.

“He was moved from Ward 14 to Ward 5, where they lost his personal medication, which was brought in with him on admission.”
