LUTON’S new swimming pool is starting to take shape, as this exclusive bird’s eye view of the Hitchin Road site shows.

The Aquatic Centre is due to open next spring, and work got underway in October, with the excavations and foundations for the two pools already completed.

Most of the floor of the main 50m pool has been completed, and its walls are currently built. The tank for the smaller community pool is completed and will be tested for water tightness shortly.

The steel frame for the building is currently being erected, starting with the sports hall, following the completion of the floor slab for the building.

The first section of the centre’s car park will open to the public in September to ease parking problems at Stopsley Common, a council spokesman said.

He added: “The work is on programme despite the severe winter we had and we look forward to opening in July next year.”

Once complete, the site will be home to the 50m, eight lane pool, a diving training centre, a 20m x 10m community pool, a sports hall, a 100-station gym, aerobics studios, a function room and a cafe and creche.
