A COMMUNITY charity is using newly secured funding to hold a free advice and activity workshop today.

The Shanthona Womens Group, based at the Dallow Learning Community Centre, has teamed up with a variety of local partners, including Noble Solicitors and Adams Moore family law firm to help the community gain support and develop knowledge.

The funding, which has come from TCHC community grants, will be used to launch a series of community events and means of helping local residents, some of which will be showcased at today’s event.

The Shanthona group started out initially as a voluntary organisation in 2004 but became a registered charity two years ago.

The group help the local community in a range of ways, from running festive and cultural events to lifestyle activites and arts and crafts.

Members of the team speak a range of languages including English, Bangali and Urdu, so are even available to help those who aren’t confident when it comes to Town Hall matters such as paying bills and claiming benefits as well as fiscal problems.

The team also strive to give people the skills needed to secure a job - often taking people on as volunteers to teach them the skills they might need in the world of work.

The event will take place at Dallow Learning Community Centre, in Dallow Road, from 1.30pm until 6.30pm.

For more information on the Shanthona Womens Group send an email to shanthona@hotmail.co.uk.
