COUNCIL officers faced questions on Monday from families worried about changes to day care centres in Luton.

Luton Borough Council wants to make changes to day centres that cater for the elderly and adults with learning disabilities, to give people “more choice about the type of activities they would like to take part in”.

The proposals include:

> Moving the older person’s day care service from the Stopsley Day Centre to the sheltered housing unit at Colwell Court in Wigmore;

> Moving the older person’s day care service from the Milan Day Centre in Limbury to Dallow Learning and Community Centre;

> Moving the SKY learning difficulty support service at the Milan Day Centre to other suitable day care facilities;

> Developing the St Monica’s Day Care Centre in Biscot into a specialist dementia day care unit;

> ‘Restructuring’ staff within the council’s day care service.

At Monday’s consultation event at Hockwell Ring Community Centre, a document was handed out addressing concerns already raised at previous events.

But those present still had further questions, including why facilities were being moved out of Stopsley to Wigmore.

Roger Kirk, the council’s business redesign manager, said: “Experts say the cost of investing in Colwell Court is more efficient than investing in Stopsley Day Centre.

“We are trying to create more opportunities for social inclusion but we also have to look at this in the context of money as well.”

Another member of the public commented that the changes had not been widely publicised, saying: “I would have liked to have seen a proper consultation.

“I only found out about this meeting through a letter to a service user, it wasn’t advertised anywhere.”
