FOOTBALL: Entertaining Dunstable Town were involved in another goal fest but this time lost out 3-2 at home to Colney Heath in Molten Spartan SML Premier on Tuesday night.
Having drawn 3-3 last time out, with the Magpies grabbing a point in injury time, it was again Colney who had more to celebrate.
Firm but controversial refereeing, saw Dunstable granted one penalty, but denied another. Daniel Staples’ handball was punished by a caution and spot-kick that Luke Lincoln converted after 11 frantic minutes of crisp attacking by both sides.
Moments later the visitors were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box and Dave Corran fired superbly into the top corner.
This handed the visitors the initiative and they had the better chances for the remainder of the first half and took the lead on 33 minutes when Kevin Ashwood’s artistry was finished off with a fine strike into the top right-hand corner.
And Heath gave themselves some breathing space as they made it 3-1 two minutes after the break when Carl Ashton took advantage of some lethargic defending.
Blues had the better scoring opportunities after that but could only score once. The introduction of Kerran Birch transformed the game and he pulled one back with 20 minutes to go.
Town laid siege to the Magpies’ goal, with Lincoln, Jonathan Cooper and Luke Abraham firing in the shots, but Tom Blackman was not to be beaten again.
On Saturday, Dunstable’s home game with Haringey Borough was postponed. Tonight they travel to Stotfold in the quarter-finals of the Challenge Trophy, on Saturday they visit Hillingdon Borough in the league and go to Biggleswade United on Tuesday night.
