IF you enjoy nature and being in the great outdoors, head down to Limbury Riverside Park on Saturday morning (February 26), where you take part in a community orchard planting day.

The Friends of Icknield and Runfold Park will be planting trees in an area of the park that records show was once an orchard, after funding was secured from the Chalk Arc Initiative, which works to fund improvement of green spaces in housing growth areas in Luton.

The Friends will be helped out on the day by teams from Luton Borough Council and the Luton branch of environmental charity Groundwork.

Geoff Bunce, from Groundwork, said: “This project will help create a new wildlife habitat in this area of the park. Fruit blossoms in the spring will brighten up the route and will attract bees, butterflies and other winged insects which in turn will provide natural pollination to other plants throughout the park.”

The planting takes place from 10am to 12pm and anyone taking part should wear sturdy shoes or boots. All tools and equipment will be provided.

Councillor Sheila Roden, in charge of parks, said: “The addition of an orchard and a wild flower meadow in the open space will provide opportunities for local families and schools to promote the benefits of eating fresh fruit, as well as being a great opportunity for local people to be part of the park’s continual improvement.”
