COUNCILLORS have been branded ‘mean-spirited’ after George Street remained a bunting-free zone over the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday.
Luton News readers have complained that the town centre paled in comparison to Hitchin, Bedford and Harpenden, where main thoroughfares were decorated to celebrate the occasion.
Responding to the criticism, a Luton Borough Council spokesman said: “Love Luton held a spectacular party in St George’s Square on Sunday June 3 as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
“St George’s Square was appropriately decorated to mark this special occasion.
“In addition, and to ensure that decorations were not only seen in the centre of Luton, we encouraged people to organise and hold their own community celebrations across the borough.”
