THE new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Luton put their mayoral robes on for the first time at the Mayor-making ceremony at the Town Hall yesterday.

Councillor Syd Knight (pictured) of Sundon Park was elected at a full Luton Borough Council meeting on May 15, and will serve as the town’s 139th mayor.

His deputy will be Councillor Asma Rathore, Labour member for Saints ward who made the news last year when it emerged some of her relatives had been invovled in fraud and other criminal activities.

Francis Steer from the Labour Party said: “Councillor Rathore was not nearly asked to leave the Labour Party over this or any other issue. She was however asked why she did not disclose this very serious issue with her relatives when she put herself forward to be a Labour councillor.

“The criminal activity of some of her relatives has no connection with her ability to carry out the role of the town’s Deputy Mayor. Nobody is calling her character into question.”
