THE new Mayor of Luton was elected at a Luton Borough Council meeting on Tuesday (May 15).
Councillor Syd Knight of Sundon Park will be the Mayor for the rest of the municipal year and his deputy will be Councillor Asma Rathore, Labour member for Saints ward.
Mayor Knight was a Luton Councillor from 1991-2003, and became a councillor again last year.
He said: “I have many years experience working in Sundon Park ward and I’m really looking forward to my time as Mayor. I’m hoping to do some work with the charities I support which are Mary Seacole, Luton Age Concern, Mercy Worldwide and Infant Cot Death charity.”
Mayor Knight is a semi-retired social worker, specialising in mental health, and he is hoping to raise awareness about dementia.
He said he is also looking forward to improving the town and the next city status bid.
The Mayor’s making ceremony will take place next week.
