ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY residents are invited to take advantage of Luton Borough Council’s offers on composting equipment after Compost Awareness Week.

The council is offering residents free compost for their gardens – all you have to do is take an empty bag to fill up at either of Luton’s household waste recylcing centres on Eaton Green Road and Progress Way.

Compost Awareness Week which finished on May 12 is in its twelfth year and highlights the benefits of recyling garden waste into compost.

Councillor Dave Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “Most people don’t realise that up to 30 per cent of their household bin is made up of organic waste which can be turned into compost.

“Compost is easy to make and use, and can really be a gardener’s best friend – helping to make plants stronger while reducing the amount of times that they need to be watered. I’d really encourage everyone who is interested in gardening and composting to take us up on our offer and start composting in their homes.”

Compost is made by mixing selected organic wastes from the garden to create a free, natural and rich fertilizer which can be used to help plants grow and keep soil healthy.
