A NEW ‘music education hub’ is to be created in Luton, after the council’s music service secured a £1.6 million grant from the Arts Council England.

The aim of the centre is to ensure every child has the opportunity to experience a high quality music education.

Partner organisations already signed up to the new hub include Luton Culture, UK Centre for Carnival Arts, E-Learning @ Luton, Greenbank Music Village, Luton Sixth Form College and Luton schools, as well as several regional and national organisations.

Councillor Tahir Khan, responsible for children’s services, said: “Well done to the Luton Music Service for their competitive bid to Arts Council England to secure funding for the next three years.

“This means children, irrespective of their background, will be given more opportunities to learn to play instruments and to learn to sing.”

The new services will include music and singing lessons, individual and small group lessons, out-of-school groups and activities, projects and workshops, and training development opportunities for school-based staff.

The hub has been created as part of the government’s new National Plan for Music Education, to enable children to have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, to make music with others, to learn to sing, and to progress to the next level of excellence.
