PRIME Minister David Cameron took questions from workers at Luton’s Vauxhall plant during a visit today (Thursday).

The production line for Vivaro vans in Kimpton Road fell silent for nearly two hours as Mr Cameron toured the plant where 1,500 people are employed building commercial vehicles.

One hundred and 50 employees sat and stood round the jacketless Prime Minister as he fielded seven questions as a part of the Conservative party’s campaigning for the local elections on May 5.

During the PM Direct session Mr Cameron was quizzed on topics ranging from foreign aid at a time of cutbacks in the UK to celebrities taking out so-called ‘super-injunctions’ to gag the press.

Mr Cameron said foreign aid was in this country’s best interests, but on the question of ‘super-injunctions’ he admitted he would have to do some more thinking on the issue.

The Prime Minister had warm words for Luton’s Vauxhall plant, which has recently been given the contract to build Vivaro and Renault Trafic vans beyound 2014. The plant has also been provisionally approved a government regional development grant.

Mr Cameron said: “I am pleased to be here, it is a great British success story.”

He praised Vauxhall for working 12 million hours without a serious injury, which he called an ‘incredible record’.

The Conservative party leader also said the government had been making ‘difficult decisions’ during a ‘difficult year’ for the economy.
