THE DEMOLITION of Luton library car park could begin before the end of the year, according to a council spokesman.
The 700 bay structure has stood empty since December 2008 when a routine inspection revealed concerns about its safety.
It is owned by The Mall who are responsible for its maintenance.
The council spokesman said: “They have indicated that is beyond economic repair and will have to be demolished.
“We have agreed that they will look at a more comprehensive development for the area which will include development of the car park site and the area on the Library Road side of St George’s Square.”
He added a planning application had been made in respect of the demolition but was still to be agreed as complications had arisen over the need to co-ordinate road closures required for the work.
