AN INTRODUCTORY evening for Vauxhall Male Voice Choir proved a harmonious success.
“We’ve had six or seven people express an interest in joining,” said PR secretary Peter Wall.
Among the aspiring choristers was retired welder Julius Leslie of Sundon Park. The 67-year-old said he’d attended the event at St Margaret’s Methodist Church in Luton’s Biscot Mill to “come and see what it’s all about.”
He started singing in the church choir when he was a lad growing up on the Caribbean island of Dominica and he liked the idea of the camaraderie of belonging to a choir again.
Retired accountant Andrew Turnbull, 60, of Dunstable Road was also flexing his vocal cords. A member of the Pulloxhill Singers, he confessed he couldn’t read music but said: “It’s such a nice hobby.”
Engineer Raja Muthusami, 63, of Limbury enjoys traditional music and came along “to give it a go.”
He added: “My kids say I sing in tune. I’ve just got to get used to the melody and rhythm.”
VMVC vice chairman Richard Ley, 44, a BT systems administrator, joined in 2005.
“A choir is a good leveller,” he said. “You mix with all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds.
“We usually have between 40 and 50 turning up for practice and we get to go to all sorts of different places when we put on a performance.
