A HIGH school that was in special measures seven years ago has been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted inspectors.
The inspectors said Ashcroft High School, in Crawley Green Road, Luton, was “an outstanding school that works in the most challenging of circumstances”.
They went on to praise the “clear vision” of the headteacher and senior leaders, and described it as “an exceptionally caring school which places guidance and support at the heart of its work, enabling students from many different backgrounds to make the very best of the opportunities it provides”.
Ashcroft headteacher Monica Austin said: “I am delighted with the Ofsted judgement of outstanding. It tells the story of the incredible journey that we have been on as a school, from special measures in 2004 to outstanding in 2011.
“The whole school community has been given a real lift.
“We understand that outstanding does not mean perfect, and we are passionate about improving learning at Ashcroft even further.”
Four other high schools have also just received their Ofsted reports, with Cardinal Newman, Lea Manor and Stopsley all rated ‘good’. Putteridge High School was judged to be ‘satisfactory’ with good features.
Martin Pratt, corporate director of children and learning at Luton Borough Council, said: “It was unusual for five Ofsted inspections to take place simultaneously in Luton.
“I would like to congratulate all these schools on their assessments which represent good news for students and parents.
“Luton schools have a strong history of working together collaboratively to improve the education experience and outcomes for young people, and these reports reflect that shared approach and commitment to partnership working.”
The inspectors praised Lea Manor’s “provision for pupils’ personal, social and emotional development” saying pupils were safe and had healthy lifestyles.
Cardinal Newman Catholic School had a “very positive ethos” which “greatly assists the academic and personal development of every student”, its report said.
At Stopsley, inspectors found pupils of all abilities were enthusiastic about learning, well-behaved, made good progress and improved year on year.
