TWO girls performed at the official celebrations to mark Charles Dickens’ bicentennary in London on Tuesday.

Lizzie Bollada, 16, from Caddington, and Nadine Turk, 18, from Luton, danced at a dinner attended by members of Dickens’ family and special guests as part of musical theatre group West End Kids.

They entertained the Mansion House diners with a special programme of Dickensian song and dance.

Luton Sixth From College student Nadine said: “It went really well and it was really exciting to be there.

“We performed at the start to set the mood and then just before the food was served we sang a Dickens song begging for food.

“It was quite nerve-wracking with members of Charles Dickens’ family being there and people like the Lord Mayor of London and Sir Patrick Stewart.”

Nadine and Lizzie have performed with the dance troupe in front of famous faces before, including the Prime Minister.

Nadine said: “I was familiar with Dickens’ work, especially the more popular things like A Christmas Carol and the ones that have been made into musicals. It was nice to be there and be part of the celebrations because it made me realise how important Dickens is and just how he is a part of English heritage and history.”
