A DRIVER has hit out at the mindless thugs who threw objects at his car as he drove along a busy road – with two young children sat in the back.
Wes Smith, 36, was driving his VW Golf on Bramingham Road, Luton, just opposite McDonald’s, when he heard a loud crack. When he turned round he saw his nearside rear window had been shattered. Sitting in the back were his godchildren William and Skye Bolton, aged five and three.
Mr Smith, who lives in the New Town area of Luton, said: “I was absolutely shocked that someone could be so stupid to throw anything at passing cars. The two little ones were left shaken and upset at what had happened.
“Luckily they were fine and no-one was hurt, but it could so easily have been a different story. It was only a few days ago that horrific images were released of a woman who was hit by a rock that was thrown from a motorway bridge.
“These thugs need some sense knocking into them. Someone could so easily have been killed.”
Mr Smith had spent the day looking after the children with his partner Cathy Mee, 31, and they were returning to the youngsters’ home in Icknield Way when the drama happened at around 6pm on Saturday (December 10).
He reported the incident to the police but, as it was dark and he was driving, he was not able to identify who may have been responsible and police told him they will not be able to take any action.
The damage was estimated at between £200 and £250 to repair the window alone, but the stones also caused damage to the door that will add another £100 to the repair bill.
“The cost is irrelevant to be honest and hopefully the insurance will cover most of it”, said Mr Smith. “I’m just grateful that everybody escaped from the incident unharmed.
“Poor little Skye was the one sitting closest to the shattered window and it’s only thanks to the high quality of glass in modern cars that it didn’t shower her in nasty shards. We were all very lucky.”
A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said the incident appeared to be an isolated one, and said any witnesses should call 01234 841212.
