TWO men were told they had “brought shame on their community” when they were sentenced for benefit fraud.
Adalat Khan, 67, of Dallow Road, and Mohammed Gulzar, 41, of Bishopscote Road, appeared at Luton Magistrates Court on November 18 after being found guilty in October of giving false information to Luton Borough Council.
Khan claimed £9,600 of housing and council tax benefit for a property where he did not live. His application was supported by Gulzar, who was the owner and landlord of the property.
Khan was given a 12 month community order with a six month curfew from 7pm until 7am. He was also ordered to pay £830 towards the council’s costs.
Gulzar was given a 14-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, ordered to carry out 300 hours unpaid community work, given an 18-month supervision order and told to pay £830 costs.
