LUTON Borough Council has succeeded in its legal bid to have the government’s decision to scrap the Building Schools for the Future scheme re-examined.
Last July the new coalition government said it was scrapping the Building Schools For The Future programme, leaving Luton Borough Council and teachers furious.
Two schools – Cardinal Newman and Stopsley High School – were just seven weeks away from construction getting started when it was announced the scheme had been axed.
The council launched a joint judicial review bid with five other local authorities to have the decision examined in the courts.
Luton said the scrapping of the scheme had left it with £3.6 million of costs for aborted work.
The authorities involved said the decision to scrap the projects was “unfair and unlawful”.
Education Secretary Michael Gove will now look have to look again at his decisions in these six areas.
