A NEW 24-hour gym and fitness studio could be set to open in Luton’s Galaxy Centre.

Nation-wide fitness chain The Gym has applied for planning permission to turn the old Brannigans nightclub site in the leisure complex’s ground floor into a new fitness centre.

The company, which already has gyms across the UK including in Birmingham, Brighton and Liverpool and is looking to expand its empire, hopes to be granted planning permission to convert the site’s 1,463 square metres of ground floor and mezzanine floor space.

Plans do not include a studio for group classes and acoustic flooring will be installed in various parts of the site to minimise noise affecting parts of the Galaxy Centre.

The chain offers low cost and flexible membership options with typical membership costing £15.99 a month with no tie-in contract.

The company’s website says that it hopes Luton’s latest gym will open as soon as March or April next year despite the planning process still being in its initial stages.

A spokesman for Luton Borough Council said: “The application is in its early stages of consideration with responses from the consultations undertaken yet to be completed.”

The site has remained deserted since once popular nightspot Brannigans closed its doors for the last time back in 2004 after new managers at parent company Leisure Parks carried out a “strategic review”.

The club once considered adding a helicopter landing pad to the Galaxy Centre’s roof in order to attract top stars to make guest appearances.

Bosses boasted back in 2000 that a helipad would enable Brannigans to host the likes of model Caprice.
