A LUTON centre of learning is helping its parent college to pump nearly £60million into the local economy.

Luton Learning Centre, in Upper George Street, is part of Bedford College, which has opened up its books to show how it has contributed to the area.

The college also includes Shuttleworth College at Old Warden and other centres in Rushden, Northants.

It has a focus on making what it calls real ‘business links’ with employers.

College chief executive and principal Ian Pryce said: “We make a major contribution – helping to grow the local economy and maintain employment – especially among young people.”

> Mayor of Luton Tom Shaw presented nearly 30 certificates to people who have become IT-skilled thanks to the Luton Learning Shop.

They ranged from those who had never switched on a PC, or couldn’t log on to the internet, to those who wanted some basic skills and a recognised qualification to help them search for a job. All of them were helped by the staff at the centre – led by Jackie Riley.
